The mind map editor has received a new default theme called “Delight” (which I like), but, overall, the MindNode experience has stayed the same. When a conflicted copy was detected, MindNode brought up a conflict resolution tool that wouldn’t let me edit a document unless I chose a master copy again – which is the right way to handle conflicts (see: Byword). In my tests with MindNode 3.0 on an iPhone and iPad and MindNode Pro 1.10.4 for OS X, iCloud sync was substantially improved from the old version: changes were synced after a few seconds across devices, and I had to force the app to create a sync conflict. Search within a list view has been added to MindNode, but it doesn’t look at the contents (text) of your maps – just the filename, which isn’t particularly useful to me. ![]() If I had to nitpick, I’d say that it’d be nice to be able to drag & drop items to create folders and to have slightly faster transitions. The document browser has been rewritten: folders sync with iCloud, and they open/close with a transition that’s similar to Apple’s one for folders on the iOS 7 Home screen. I don’t have particular exporting or inter-app communication needs for my mind maps (I just keep one next to my iPad or MacBook while I’m writing), but I’ve used the PDF and PNG options to send a document to coworkers.įor version 3.0, the entire app has been redesigned with iOS 7’s focus on content in mind: in the main Mind Maps screen, thumbnail previews are larger and you can tap on an arrow button next to a map’s name to show buttons to rename a map, move it, duplicate it, or delete it. ![]() MindNode, which I covered on MacStories in the past, is one of the few apps that I use with iCloud sync because, aside from a couple of occasions, it’s always been fast and smooth for me in the past. I don’t use MindNode every day – I would say probably once a week when I’m planning a big article or feature for the site – but when I do, I like its elegant layout and underlying simplicity. MindNode for iOS gets the 3.0 treatment today with a major update that redesigns the app, makes it iOS 7-only, adds new features, and cleans up some old ones while staying free for existing customers. And in the modern age, unless I need specific advanced features of iThoughts, I usually open MindNode – IdeasOnCanvas’ app for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. When my brain has to jump from point to point several times and a text outline isn’t enough, I like the visual approach of mind maps. Back then I had no iPhone or iPad and the school’s computers were some cheap Pentium 4s that the school administration couldn’t upgrade due to lack of regional funds, so I spent hours drawing little boxes and coloring them with highlighters. Since I was in middle school and especially in high school, I got used to remember topics by creating mind maps (“concept maps”, as our teachers called them) with pen and paper for classes like History, Ancient Greek, English Literature, or Philosophy. For pieces that are focused on a single subject (like an app review, a tutorial, or an opinion piece), the simple outline system works well because Evernote can keep everything in one place and show inline previews.įor longer articles that require deeper research and span a variety of topics, however, I like mind maps. Non-Israelites who lived within the area believed by the Hebrews to have been promised to them by God were seen to pose a great temptation to them to abandon their faith. God demanded purity and strict obedience, and idolatry and blasphemy were punishable by death (Exodus 20:3, 5). The first of the Mosaic commandments prohibited the Israelites from worshipping any other gods but Yahweh. ![]() This is probably what most Jewish people would affirm today.īut collective punishment and indiscriminate war were also commanded or approved in the Hebrew Bible, especially in cases of idolatry. ![]() This would also be consistent with punishing only those guilty of crimes (Deuteronomy 24:16) and limiting the use of deadly force to the defense of innocent others or oneself. So perhaps we might interpret the image-of-God idea to mean, All persons have a basic right not to be killed, but they can forfeit that right if they commit a serious enough crime. But that is not what the ancient Hebrews concluded, since many offenses were subject to capital punishment, a form of killing (see examples in Exodus 21-22). One might infer from that idea that no killing of persons would be allowed at all, that the concept of human beings as made in God's image would entail strict pacifism, an absolute duty not to kill people. Why is murder wrong, other than its obvious conflict with love of neighbor (Leviticus 19:17-18, 33-34)? Essentially because people are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27, 9:6). One of the Mosaic commandments prohibits murder (Exodus 20:13). Most of my comments will be about Christianity, but I'll start with the Hebrew Bible, since it is considered sacred by all three traditions. Questioning the moral justification of holy war leads, moreover, to troubling questions about the legitimacy of some basic theological claims and the authority of foundational religious scripture. The same religious traditions that affirm God to be compassionate, merciful, and just, also include more disturbing claims that promote religious hatred and intolerance, and sadly have provided a rationale for aggressive holy war. The problem of indiscriminate holy war is particularly difficult for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam to eliminate from within because it's so deeply rooted in their scriptures and traditions. There may even be a genetic tendency in our species, like that of our chimpanzee relatives, to attack and kill others for no reason except that they aren't "one of us." (Wrangham and Peterson)īut religious violence can take on a particularly intense and ruthless character, if the objects of that violence are seen as blaspheming or insulting God, as the enemies of God or God's way narrowly conceived. And some of the most appalling atrocities in history have been rooted not in religion per se but rather in racial or class hatred. For example, just a few days prior to the September 11 attacks, two young men from the Sacramento area each killed half a dozen people, apparently out of personal revenge. People seem to be able to invent all sorts of rationales for mass killing without feeling the need to cite the will of God. Religion is clearly not the only catalyst of total war and other forms of indiscriminate violence. Why then do some members of those same communities believe that it is their moral obligation to wage aggressive holy war, even to annihilate innocent people in God's name? What aspects of their scriptures and traditions tend to support violence against "infidels"? What ethical principles-religious and non-religious-can we affirm in response to those ideas and the atrocities that they sometimes engender? In contrast to the deep hatred that obviously inspired the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the vast majority of Muslims, like their Jewish and Christian counterparts, are appalled and sickened by terrorism, and utterly repudiate the mass murder of innocent people. As a result, those communities have often nurtured people of extraordinary kindness and courageous commitment to justice. In spite of the many differences among Christians, Jews, and Muslims, they share a fundamental belief in God as compassionate and just. The through line in Hellboy’s confusion is Lil Peep’s voice, which reveals pain when he declares numbness, and joy when he claims ennui. Instead of deliberating toward a solution, he communicated his uncertainty. The tape exists in a constant state of flux between Peep’s superego and his id, as on “Interlude” where he asks, “Two racks on my new shoes/Why the fuck I do that?/Tell me, why the fuck do I do that?” What are we to believe when he sings, “I just fell in love with a bad bitch/Told me that she love me too, baby, I’m not havin’ it.” Peep could be impetuous but maybe not overly serious expensive footwear and reciprocated love are both distressing and perhaps funny or even boring to him. ![]() The brilliance in Hellboy comes with how Peep juxtaposed his desires with his reality. That intake indifference shows on “Cobain,” when Peep raps, “Sniffin’ cocaine ’cause I didn’t have no Actavis.” “I just like smoking weed and whatever other drug comes my way,” he offered as the alternative. He sang as much on “The Song They Played ”: “I don’t wanna die alone right now, but I admit I do sometimes.” In that same interview, Peep said he didn’t want to take anti-depressants. “I suffer from depression, and some days I wake up and I’m like, Fuck, I wish I didn’t wake up,” Peep told Pitchfork in January 2017. Still, the truth in Lil Peep’s songs matched with Gustav Åhr’s reality. If you’re going to engage with him and listen to his art, you’re going to do so on his terms and accept what he provides. It speaks to his barrier, a built-in defensive nature. That line feels like an invitation into his psyche, but he’s telling you that you will not know him. “You don’t even know what I been through,” the tape begins, with Peep rapping flatly over a bass guitar lifted from the Christian metalcore band Underoath, as if to suggest that the full story is not worth the time. The chorus of “Fucked Up,” for example, starts, “I’ve been all the way fucked up/Girl, you got me fucked up/One chance and I fucked it up.” There was no need for excess when he made the consequences of his music so steep.Īmid the clear communication, however, were clues that Peep’s mind was impossible to penetrate. This is not to say that Lil Peep single-handedly invented a genre or door-busted his way to the top of the industry. The top rap song at the time was DRAM and Lil Yachty’s “ Broccoli,” which sounds ancient now. Hellboy arrived two disproportionately long years ago, before emo trap was marketable and mumble rap was canon. It is an artifact that brings you as close as possible to Lil Peep. It’s callous, brazen, and indulgent, the sound of someone testing out the entire spectrum of feeling for the very first time. ![]() Hellboy paints the portrait of a young person who is bursting open with emotion, trying to share his experiences as vividly as he can while covering all the formative scars that still ache. “I ain’t gonna lie, I’ma keep it real/I don’t wanna tell you how I feel,” he sang on “Fucked Up,” at once revealing and concealing the truth. All the while, Peep hid the reasons for his behavior from the listener. The mixtape is filled with suicidal declarations, rampant drug use, and moments of delight and impulse. Uploaded to SoundCloud in September 2016, Hellboy is the masterpiece of Lil Peep’s lifetime. ![]() It’s frustrating as someone who remembers a happy brother.” How could the kid who sang, “I used to wanna kill myself/Came up, still wanna kill myself,” be anything but deeply inconsolable?
